Journey to the South
|
a Chinese Mythology story
|
|
Sound recording, story; Journey to the South,
a performance of combined historical tale, Chinese mythology,
legend and music performed by Ben Haggarty and the Silk Road
Ensemble as part of Creative Exchanges - Sights and Sounds of the
Silk Road, a museum residency in The Peabody Essex Museum, Salem,
Massachusetts, North America, 22nd January 2004
|
|
The performance combining story and music was
created in response and relation to a Chinese scroll in the
Peabody Essex Museum's collection. A moving image of the scroll
was projected behind the performers as the peice was performed.
The performance comprises sections of music, with historical
narration read by Ko Umezaki, and sections of storytelling by Ben
Haggarty. These are a story of the encounter by an Emporer with
Chung Kwai, a Chinese protector god, who rids the Emporer of
demons. And a story about the tradition of dragon boat racing and
offerings of rice to dragon gods, through the story of poet Chu
Ueng who was bannished to a community of fishermen for his
criticism of an Emporer, where he committed suicide by drowning
himself in the river.
