Yonec
a Lays of Marie du France story

Sound recording, story; Yonec, a Welsh transformation tale and wonder tale from The Lays of Marie du France, told by Ben Haggarty, as part of a performance Medieval Tales, in Medieval Mayhem medieval festival, at the Guild Hall, Sandwich, Kent, 26th August 2006.

A story told by Ben Haggarty about an elderly man, who guards his wife so jealously that he locks her in a tower, watched over by his sister. The young women prays for a young lover and is visited by a man, who appears in the form of a hawk. Her sister-in-law and husband find out about her secret liaisons, and create a trap which injures the hawk when he next flies in through the tower window. Injured, the hawk leaves and is followed back to his land by the young wife. The young wife learns that the man is King of his land and that she will bear his child. Before he dies, he gves the young wife a ring for her to wear, which will make her husband forget everything, and a dagger to give their son when he comes of age. The young wife returns home, gives birth to a son and continues her life with her husband. One year, when the son is eighteen, the wife, the husband and the son become lost on a journey and seek refuge in an abbey, where they find the tomb of the Hawk-King. The wife reveals the secret of her son's father and removes the ring from her finger. Learning the story, the boy kills the husband and avenges his father.
