Introduction by Sally Pomme Clayton, including a short story about knowledge and the lack of it; followed by story told by Sally Pomme Clayton. A prince who always has to have the last word on everything is offered for marriage, along with half the kingdom, to any girl who can shut him up. Three poor sisters try their luck. On their way to the palace the youngest sister collects a dead black bird, a stick, a saucer, some ram's horns and other miscellany from the roadside. When she meets the prince these items provide the subject matter for her retorts to each of his comments, and she succeeds in silencing him.
