a Jack Tale story

Sound recording, story; a wonder tale and Jack tale told by Duncan Williamson in The First International Storytelling Festival at Battersea Arts Centre, London, 1st February 1985

Story told by Duncan Williamson. After his mother's death Jack is raised by a rich merchant. After fifteen years of work, Jack leaves to seek his fortune, taking with him a gift of gold from the merchant. Jack seeks shelter in the home of an old man, giving him the gold as payment. In return the old man gives Jack a magic gun and a magic violin. Jack uses the gun and violin to take money from a money lender. The money lender has Jack captured and sentenced to be hanged, but Jack uses the magic violin to escape, and is pardoned.

The First International Storytelling Festival took place at Battersea Arts Centre, (Venue Director Jude Kelly) London, in 1985, and was the first international festival of storytelling held in the UK. It ran for 7 days, from Monday Jan 28th to Sunday Feb 3rd. The festival was initiated and directed by Ben Haggarty who had been involved in running the West London Storytelling unit and Storytelling Unit Clubnights since 1982/1983. It was funded by a guarantee against loss from the GLC. The festival programmed included performances for adult audiences, talks and lectures, school sessions, a festival 'clubnight' and a teacher's conference on Storytelling in Education.
