Monkey Misery
Monkey Trouble

Sound recording, story; Monkey Misery, a folk tale from Haiti, told by Ben Haggarty as part of Storytelling in the Cafe, in The First International Storytelling Festival at Battersea Arts Centre, London, 30th January 1985

Crick crack call and response, followed by a story told by Ben Haggarty. A story about Monkey who tastes something delicious, which he believes is something called 'misery', but is in fact honey. Monkey goes on the search for more misery, a search which finally takes him to Papa God. Papa God gives Monkey a sack with a dog in it.

This is an early telling of the story by Ben Haggarty. Ben Haggarty originally took the story from Diane Wolkstein's book The Magic Organge Tree, in which monkey looks for misery. He later heard the story from Rita Ademokum as part of a story collection project run by the West London Storytelling Unit in the 1980s. Rita referred to Monkey searching for trouble and in later tellings of the story by Ben, Monkey searches for trouble, rather than misery.
