Sound recording, story; a wonder tale,
outwitting the devil story and outwitting death story, from
Russia or Europe told by Ben Haggarty as part of an evening of
storytelling, as part of The First International Storytelling
Festival at Battersea Arts Centre, London, 29th January
1985

Introduction by Sally Pomme Clayton, followed
by story told by Ben Haggarty. A story about a Russian soldier
who, on retiring from the army, receives a pipe, tobacco, and 3
dry biscuits as payment. The soldier gives away his biscuits to
three beggars, the last of whom gives him a magical pack of
cards, and a magic sack in which anything can be captured. The
soldier uses the sack and the pack of cards to rid the Zsar's
summer palace of devils and demons. He makes a deal with one
devil and is given a glass through which he can see Death, and
predict whether a patient will live or die. The Zsar becomes ill,
but threatens to have the soldier shot if he cannot cure him. The
soldier tricks Death and traps him in his sack, so the Zsar
survives. After some time the soldier is confronted by a very
elderly women who has been waiting for Death to take her. The
soldier releases death, but he himself remains immortal on the
Earth.
