Story told by Robin Williamson. A drunken
farmer has three sons; a vicar, a doctor and a lawyer. The Farmer
is lying on his death bed when the devil appears. He is met by
the vicar who declares: 'I can beat you at dominoes, I can beat
you at dominoes' which stops the devil in his tracks, and he
grants the farmer another year of life to repent his sins. The
farmer continues to drink. A year later the doctor persuades the
devil to give him another years life, by offering to treat his
cloven hoof. The farmer continues to drink. A year later the
devil meets the Lawyer who has prepared a contract which will
release the farmer's soul to the devil, but only once the candle
on the table has burnt out, then he snuffs the candle, so that it
never burns out. The devil sees the potential in this man and
employs him along with every other lawyer in the land. So, when
years later the last plumber in Glasgow is sent to hell by
mistake, and God threatens to sue if he is not returned to
heaven, the devil's response is to ask where he is going to find
a lawyer.

In 2003, Jillian Barker, Head of Education at the Barbican
Centre, London, approached Ben Haggarty, Artistic Director of the
Crick Crack Club, with a proposal to programme regular
performance storytelling at the Barbican Centre. Since 2003 the
Crick Crack Club has worked in partnership with Barbican
Education to programme 9 events a year in the Barbican Pit
Theatre, for adult audiences. These events are programmed during
the three school half terms each year, with usually three evening
events per half term. The performances of storytelling are
occasionally preceded by pre-show talks. The Pit Theatre is an
award winning black box theatre, which seats approximately 180
people (depending on the seating configuration).
