Mabinogion, The
a Mabinogion story

Sound recording, story; a section of The Mabinogion, comprising myth, legend and folk tales of Welsh origin, told by Hugh Lupton as part of The Grand Storytelling Festival Celebration, at The First International Storytelling Festival at Battersea Arts Centre, London, 2nd February 1985

Introduction by Hugh Lupton to the story and the events leading up to the section of story being told, followed by story told by Hugh Lupton. A story taken from the final parts of the fourth strand of the Mabinogion. Aranrhod has cursed her son Lleu twice, but with the help of the wizard Gwydion, Lleu has tricked her out of the curses. The story tells of how Aranrhod curses Lleu a third time, this time a curse that he can marry no women in the world. Gwydion takes pity on Lleu and creates him a women from the flowers of the forest. This women becomes Lleu's wife, but she betrays him and has him killed by her lover.

Another version of this section of myth, combined with sections of the legend of King Arthur, is told by Katy Cawkwell in her performance The Romance of Lancelot, The Bridge of the Sword, R563 and R564.

The First International Storytelling Festival took place at Battersea Arts Centre, (Venue Director Jude Kelly) London, in 1985, and was the first international festival of storytelling held in the UK. It ran for 7 days, from Monday Jan 28th to Sunday Feb 3rd. The festival was initiated and directed by Ben Haggarty who had been involved in running the West London Storytelling unit and Storytelling Unit Clubnights since 1982/1983. It was funded by a guarantee against loss from the GLC. The festival programmed included performances for adult audiences, talks and lectures, school sessions, a festival 'clubnight' and a teacher's conference on Storytelling in Education.
