a Mulla Nasrudin story; Hodja Nasrudin story

Sound recording, story; Mulla Nasrudin or Hodja story and folk tale from the Middle East, told by Ben Haggarty as part of The Grand Storytelling Festival Celebration, at The First International Storytelling Festival at Battersea Arts Centre, London, 2nd February 1985

Introduction by Ben Haggarty to this, the celebration at the end of the festival week, followed by a Hodja story told by Ben Haggarty. A story about the village under attack. The Hodja saves the village by building a bloody structure of camel's skins, climbing to the top of it and claiming to be the god of the Earth. When challenged to cure the attacker's daughter of her blindness, the Hodja states that it is the god of the sky who can help with anything above the waist, but if she should need any attention below the waist, he would be happy to assist her.

The First International Storytelling Festival took place at Battersea Arts Centre, (Venue Director Jude Kelly) London, in 1985, and was the first international festival of storytelling held in the UK. It ran for 7 days, from Monday Jan 28th to Sunday Feb 3rd. The festival was initiated and directed by Ben Haggarty who had been involved in running the West London Storytelling unit and Storytelling Unit Clubnights since 1982/1983. It was funded by a guarantee against loss from the GLC. The festival programmed included performances for adult audiences, talks and lectures, school sessions, a festival 'clubnight' and a teacher's conference on Storytelling in Education.
