A story about Jack who agrees to perform a task for the devil in a year and a day, in return for a shilling for a drink. The devil gives Jack a purse, which gives an endless supply of shillings. Jack tries to get rid of the purse. He seeks the advice of a henwife who gives him a Bible and tells him to ask the blacksmith to beat the imps out of the purse. The devil reappears and asks Jack to come to hell, to keep an eye on his imps. Jack does so, and to pass the time reads the imps the Bible. The imps are converted to Christianity and the devil sends Jack back to Earth with the imps. The imps go out into the world and Jack returns home to find that he has been away for 10 years. The Storytelling Unit was born out of the West London Storytelling Unit (W.L.S.T.U) in 1983, with members Marva Cumberbatch, Pomme Clayton, Daisy Keable. In or around 1985 Daisy Keable and Marva Cumberbatch left the Storytelling Unit, at which point Ben Haggarty, (who had been a member of the W.L.S.T.U) joined and worked with Sally Pomme Clayton for a brief period before the group was disbanded. The increased interest and demand for storytelling performance for adults led to the formation of The Company of Storytellers in 1985.
