Last Word Prince, The

Sound recording, story; The Last Word Prince, a Norwegian folk tale told by Sally Pomme Clayton, a member of The Storytelling Unit, at a performance by The Storytelling Unit and guests, entitled Fire and Gold, at the October Gallery, Old Gloucester Street, London, 5th July 1985.

Story told by Sally Pomme Clayton. A prince who always has to have the last word on everything is offered for marriage, along with half the kingdom, to any girl who can shut him up. Three poor sisters try their luck. On their way to the palace the youngest sister collects a dead black bird, a stick, a saucer, some ram's horns and other miscellany from the roadside. When she meets the prince these items provide the subject matter for her retorts to each of his comments, and she succeeds in silencing him.

The Storytelling Unit was born out of the West London Storytelling Unit (W.L.S.T.U) in 1983, with members Marva Cumberbatch, Pomme Clayton, Daisy Keable. In or around 1985 Daisy Keable and Marva Cumberbatch left the Storytelling Unit, at which point Ben Haggarty, (who had been a member of the W.L.S.T.U) joined and worked with Sally Pomme Clayton for a brief period before the group was disbanded. The increased interest and demand for storytelling performance for adults led to the formation of The Company of Storytellers in 1985.
