a Jack Tale story
|
|
Sound recording, story; a Jack tale and folk
tale from Europe, told by Hugh Lupton at a performance by The
Storytelling Unit and guests entitled Fire and Gold, at the
October Gallery, Old Gloucester Street, London, 5th July
1985.
|
|
Introduction to the evening by Ben Haggarty,
explaning that they evening brings together some of the best
storytellers working at that time in England, followed by music
played by members of The Storytelling Unit and guest
storytellers, followed by a story told by Hugh Lupton.
|
|
A story about lazy Jack, and a princess who
refuses to speak. Jack is sent out by his mother to earn a
living, but every time Jack is paid for his work, he loses,
damages or ruins what he's been given for his labours, by
carrying it home inappropriately. The final piece of work Jack
undertakes earns him a donkey which he proceeds to carry home on
his head. The silent princess sees Jack going home, and at the
sight of him, she bursts out laughing and begins to talk. Jack
wins the princess's hand in marriage. The story ends with a piece
of improvisation by Hugh Lupton and Ben Haggarty about their
experiences at the wedding of Jack to the princess, and an
overview of a story or narrative joke from TUUP.

The West London Storytelling Unit (W.L.S.T.U), was founded in
1981, by members Ben Haggarty, Godfrey Duncan and Daisy Keable
and based in an Afro-Caribbean Youth Centre, the Priory in Acton.
The members worked together and as solo artists, telling stories
mainly in school and community contexts in London. Over time
performances for adults also began to be developed. In 1983
W.L.S.T.U became The Storytelling Unit with Marva Cumberbatch,
Pomme Clayton, Daisy Keable. In or around 1985 Daisy Keable and
Marva Cumberbatch left the Storytelling Unit, at which point Ben
Haggarty rejoined and worked with Sally Pomme Clayton for a brief
period before the group was disbanded. The increased interest and
demand for storytelling performance for adults led to the
formation of The Company of Storytellers in 1985.
