Big Rock and Little Rock

Sound recording, story; Big Rock and Little Rock, a folk tale and cumulative tale from Burkina Faso told by Ben Haggarty, as part of a 'Book Me' educational event at the Barbican Centre, London, 31st May 2006.

Introduction by Ben Haggarty, questioning children in the audience about the effect of the oral stories on their imagination, followed by story told by Ben Haggarty. A story about Big Rock and Little Rock who go hunting. Little Rock catches more birds than Big Rock. He shares his birds with Big Rock, but when Big Rock refuses to share his birds in return, Little Rock gives Big Rock a shove. This sets off a chain of events which causes the King's children to be swept away by a flood of blood. Big Rock is found guilty of causing the chain of events. The King punishes Big Rock by having the whole story carved onto him, and sets him above the gate into the city as a reminder to others.

The Book Me event was a two part event run for families at the Barbican Centre London, as part of their educational provision. The event provided storytelling performances and storytelling workshops, where participants learned to retell oral stories, for family audiences.
