story
|

Sound recording, story; a section of
Metamorphoses, a version of Ovid's Metamorphoses, which orginates
from Greek mythology, told by Daniel Morden as part of the
programme The Tales They Tell, in a mini-festival of stories,
Feasting in the House of Story - A Celebration of Our Tenth
Series of Performance Storytelling, programmed by the Crick Crack
Club and Barbican Education, in the Pit Theatre, Barbican Centre,
London, 2nd June 2006.

Introduction by Ben Haggarty to Daniel Morden,
followed by story told by Daniel Morden. Zeus has declared that
anyone who approaches a house should be welcomed. Zeus and
Poseidon go down into the world to test this. Having been
rejected from house after house, they come to a house of an
elderly man and women who, despite their poverty, show them the
very best hospitality. The two Gods then punish those who had
rejected them by flooding the town, and grant the elderly couple
with two wishes. They wish for a temple where they can worshp the
Gods for the rest of their days, and they wish to die together.
They die together and are transformed into two intertwined trees,
one an oak and one a linden.

Born in 43BC, Publius Ovidus Naso, wrote
Metamorphoses in Rome, about two thousand years ago. Most of the
stories in Ovid's collection are Greek Myths and Legends, but the
names of divinities and mortals have been Romanised. In this
performance the performers returned the names to their Greek
origins.

In 2003, Jillian Barker, Head of Education at the Barbican
Centre, London, approached Ben Haggarty, Artistic Director of the
Crick Crack Club, with a proposal to programme regular
performance storytelling at the Barbican Centre. Since 2003 the
Crick Crack Club has worked in partnership with Barbican
Education to programme 9 events a year in the Barbican Pit
Theatre, for adult audiences. These events are programmed during
the three school half terms each year, with usually three evening
events per half term. The performances of storytelling are
occasionally preceded by pre-show talks. The Pit Theatre is an
award winning black box theatre, which seats approximately 180
people (depending on the seating configuration).

Performing in the programme The Tales They Tell were Ben

Marre, with music from Hassan Erraji. Hugh Lupton was programmed
to appear, but did not due to a family bereavement.
