|
|
Sound recording, story; a wonder tale, a
version of Blue Beard, of Afro-Caribbean origin told by Jan Blake
as part of the programme The Dynamics of Love, in a mini-festival
of stories, Feasting in the House of Story - A Celebration of Our
Tenth Series of Performance Storytelling, in the Pit Theatre,
programmed by the Crick Crack Club and Barbican Education,
Barbican Centre, London, 31st May 2006.

A story told by Jan Blake, with drum
accompaniment by TUUP. Crick Crack call and response followed by
story. A story about a girl with a disabled brother. The girl
comes of age and looks for a husband. A rich land owner comes to
her village and seeks her hand in marriage. The girl's brother
warns his sister that there is something wrong, but she ignores
him and the marriage takes place. The girl is taken to the man's
mansion, which she is guarded by a gaint cockeral. She is
forbidden to enter some of the rooms in the house, but when left
alone, she unlocks and looks into these rooms, and finds the
bodies and ghosts of previous wives. Her husband returns as a
bird like creature, and eats her. The girl's brother
instinctively knows that something has happened to his sister. He
goes to the mansion, kills the beast and rescues his
sister.

In 2003, Jillian Barker, Head of Education at the Barbican
Centre, London, approached Ben Haggarty, Artistic Director of the
Crick Crack Club, with a proposal to programme regular
performance storytelling at the Barbican Centre. Since 2003 the
Crick Crack Club has worked in partnership with Barbican
Education to programme 9 events a year in the Barbican Pit
Theatre, for adult audiences. These events are programmed during
the three school half terms each year, with usually three evening
events per half term. The performances of storytelling are
occasionally preceded by pre-show talks. The Pit Theatre is an
award winning black box theatre, which seats approximately 180
people (depending on the seating configuration).
