Key's, The

Sound recording, story; The Key's, an African American folk tale, and aetiological or how and why story, told by Jan Blake, and recorded in a studio for a website project entitled A Web of Tales, 1999.

In the beginning Man and Women are equal in all respects, until one day Man goes to God and asks to be stronger than Women. He is granted his wish and threatens Women with his strength. Women becomes angry with God, who refuses to equal her strength with Man's. Women seeks the advice of the devil. The devil tells Women to ask God for the 3 keys he carries on his belt. Women gains the keys - the keys to the kitchen, the keys to the bedroom and the keys to the next generation, and so forces man to reconsider his actions. Man and Women learn to co-exist with their different strengths.

The web site project and the associated website no-longer exists. This was a relatively early story website project which ran under the domain name www.webtales.com. It invited interaction and reponse to stories and offered downloadable stories.
