Sound recording, story; a wonder tale and dilemma tale of African or Caribbean origin, told by Jan Blake, and recorded in a studio for a website project entitled A Web of Tales, 1999.

A medicine man grants a couple a son, on the condition that he is kept out of sight from anyone but his direct family. The son grows into a handsome man and falls in love with a girl. The girl climbs into the young man's bed one night, but in the morning the man is dead. The medicine man burns the body of the man, and asks, mother, father and the girl each in turn to walk into the flames. The girl agrees, and the man and she are resurrected and marry. The man and wife set out on a jorney, but the man becomes weak with hunger. A passing women agrees to give him food, provided she can become his second wife. The man and two wives continue on their journey, but reach a river full of crocodiles. A passing women agrees to throw her baby into the river to distract the crocodiles so that they can cross, provided she can become a third wife. The man and three wives continue on their journey, but enter a village where the the chief threatens to kill any vistor who cannot identify where his umbilical cord is buried. The chief's daughter agrees to reveal the secret to the man and his wives, provided she can become a fourth wife. The man and his four wives live in the village, and the man becomes chief. Each wife bears a son, and on the death of the man, they ague over who should be the next chief. The listener is left with this dilemma.

The web site project and the associated website no-longer exists. This was a relatively early story website project which ran under the domain name www.webtales.com. It invited interaction and reponse to stories and offered downloadable stories.
