Leaves that Hung but Never Grew, The

Sound recording, story; The Leaves that Hung but Never Grew, a wonder tale told by Daniel Morden with musical accompaniment by The New Folks, comprising Oli Wilson-Dickson, Edward Jay and Sarah Moody, as part of the performance of Welsh gypsy stories The Devil's Violin, in the Silver Tent at Festival at the Edge, Stokes Barn, Much Wenlock, Shropshire, England, 15th July 2006.

Musical introduction by The New Folks, followed by introduction to the performance by Daniel Morden, with a socks and boots call and response, and story told by Daniel Morden. A story of a young girl who dreams of 'the leaves that hung but never grew' and who makes a journey to find them. She finds the leaves at the house of a witch and her daughter. The girl steals the leaves; releases a young man who had been captured by the witch, and escapes with the help of the magic leaves, which transform themsleves into different disguises to avoid capture. In the escpae the young man and the girl are separated, and the young man loses his memory of the events. The girl seeks out the young man and tells him the story of their adventure.

Festival at the Edge was founded in 1992 by Mike Rust and Richard 'Mogsy' Walker. It is a weekend-long annual festival of storytelling and folk music that takes place in the third weekend of July. It is an outdoors and tented festival situated in the fields surrounding Stokes Barn on the outskirts of Much Wenlock, Shropshire.
