Much of the Kalevala deals with contests between the Finns and the Lapps, and between good and evil. The Kalevala is archaic episodic mythology, containing stories some 5000 years old. The epic includes stories of creation, birth, the origin of fire, gives insights into nature, the human condition and the collective wisdom and experience of the nation. Magic features in the epic. The three main characters in the Kalevala are Wainamoinen, the ancient singer, Ilmarinen, the eternal forgeman, and Lemminkainen, the reckless wizard, all of whom are conceived as being of divine origin.

The Kalevala is the Finnish national epic. It has become the cornerstone of the finnish national identity. It was collected and published in its present form by Elias Lonnrot in 1835 and again in 1849. This represents not only a masterpiece of literature, but also a collection of runo-song (epic poetry in strict archaic trochaic tetrametre) collected from an ancient tradition of epic-singing amongst the Finnish-Urgic poeples of the Baltic regions. Though the Runolaulu (epic-singing) tradition has all but died out amongst these peoples, there are currently positive moves to revive it in Finland.
