Why the Unicorn is No More

Sound recording, story; Why the Unicorn is No More, a Medieval European creation myth, aetiological or how and why story, and apocryphal tale told by Ben Haggarty accompanied by Sianed Jones, as part of Can I Have a Word?, an educational event at The Barbican Centre, London, 10th March 2006.

Story told by Ben Haggarty. The story tells of how the Unicorn was refused space on the ark, built by Noah on God's instruction, to avoid a great flood, but how, before it drowns, the Unicorn punctures the boat with its horn. The methods Mrs Noah empoys to block the hole in the ark, provide an expnantion for why dogs have wet noses; why women have cold elbows, and why men always warm their buttocks in front of the fire.

The stories told by Ben Haggarty R513, R514, R15 - CD171 Tracks 4, 5 and 6 provided the stimulus for the children to work with poets to create original poems based on creation stories. The performance ended with poems created by professional poets R516 - CD171 Track 7.
