Raven Brings the Light

Sound recording, story; Raven Brings the Light, a First Nation Canadian creation myth from the North West Pacific Coast, told by Ben Haggarty accompanied by Sianed Jones, as part of Can I Have a Word?, an educational event at The Barbican Centre, London, 9th March 2006.

Story told by Ben Haggarty. The son of the Chief Responsible Being, dies and becomes Skeleton Boy. His servants feed him roasted scabs, which give him a huge appetite. The Chief Responsible Being sends his Skeleton Boy across the water, armed with seeds, to create his own world, re-naming him Chem Chem, Raven, Very Giant, Hungry Appetite. Chem Chem Raven finds his own land, he releases the seeds, but has no light. Chem Chem Raven returns home to find light. He turns himself into a seed in a cup, from which his sister drinks. His sister gives birth to a child, who grows, and steals a box of light.

The stories told by Ben Haggarty R510, R511, R512 - CD171 Tracks 1,2 and 3 provided the stimulus for the children to work with poets to create original poems based on creation stories. The performance ended with poems created by professional poets R516 - CD171 Track 7.
