Devil's Catechism, The
a Jack Tale story

Introduction by Ben Haggarty, including suggestions from the audience about what to include in a story, followed by story told by Ben Haggarty. A story about Jack the Widow's son, who seeks his fortune following the advice given by his mother on her death bed: 'do as you would done by', the advice of a beggar and the advice of the devil. This leads Jack to find a wife. The devil then offers Jack and his wife a flock of sheep on the understanding that, in a years time, he will appear at their door and ask them 12 questions which they must answer in order to keep the sheep and enjoy years of happiness. The questions take the form of riddles and follow a pattern of 'What is your one?', 'What is your two?' and so on. The riddles are answered with suggestions from the audience.
