a Jack Tale story

Sound recording, story; The Rabagoodbigone, a folk tale and outwitting the devil story from France, told as a Jack tale by Ben Haggarty, at the Living Crafts exhibition, at Hatfield House, Hertfordshire, England, 7th May 2006

Story told by Ben Haggarty. A story about Jack who finds himself renting a house which is owned by the devil. The devil demands half of Jack's crops for 3 years, but Jack and his wife Mary, trick him out of the best of their fruit and vegetables. To settle the ownership of the house, the devil challenges Jack to produce an animal which he cannot name, and he will do the same. Whoever can name the animal produced by the other will keep the house. Mary dresses as a strange imaginary animal, which the devil can't identify, and Jack and Mary trick the devil into revealling the name of the beast, the Rabegoodbigone, which he brings.
