Metamorphoses
a Greek Mythology story; Ovid's Metamorphoses story

Sound recording, story; Metamorphoses, a version of Ovid's Metamorphoses, orginating from Greek mythology, told by Daniel Morden and Hugh Lupton, in a mini-festival of stories, The Temples of Athene, programmed by the Crick Crack Club and Barbican Education, in the Pit Theatre, Barbican Centre, London, 16th February 2005.

Story in two halves told by Daniel Morden and Hugh Lupton. Metamorphoses serves as an introduction to the gods and goddesses, introducing their powers, provinces and temperaments. Stories include that of Demeter and Persephone, Orpheus in the Underworld, Echo and Narcissus.

Born in 43BC, Publius Ovidus Naso, wrote Metamorphoses in Rome, about two thousand years ago. Most of the stories in Ovid's collection are Greek Myths and Legends, but the names of divinities and mortals have been Romanised. In this performance the performers returned the names to their Greek origins.

Metamorphoses was intended as the first of a trilogy of performances by High Lupton and Daniel Morden, followed by the Iliad and the Odyssey. Metamorphoses was originally commissioned by The Guardian Hay Festival.

Since 2003 the Crick Crack Club has worked in partnership with Barbican Education to programme 9 events a year in the Barbican Pit Theatre, for adult audiences. These events are programmed during the three school half terms each year, with usually three evening events per half term. The performances of storytelling are occasionally preceded by pre-show talks. The Pit Theatre is an award winning black box theatre, which seats approximately 180 people (depending on the seating configuration).
