Man in search of his Luck, The

Sound recording, story; The Man in search of his Luck, a folk tale and moral tale told by Abbi Patrix within the performance Au bout du Monde or The End of the World Show, in a mini-festival of stories, Journeys of the Heart, programmed by the Crick Crack Club and Barbican Education, in the Pit Theatre, Barbican Centre, London, 14th February 2007.

A story told by Abbi Patrix accompanying himself on an African thumb piano. A story about a man who goes on a journey to find the creator and ask him why he has no luck. On his journey he meets a starving wolf who can't find food, a tree who can reach no water and a beautiful, but bored women. He agrees to take their questions to God along with his own. The man finds God, who tells him that he must look for his luck, and he answers the questions of the the women, the tree and the wolf. The man makes a return journey. He tells the women that she must marry a man, but refuses to marry her himself as he is too busy; he tells the tree that gold is buried under its roots, but refuses to dig it up as he is too busy, and tells the wolf that he should eat the next thing it sees coming down the path. The wolf eats the man. The story is followed by comment on the audience's response to the story.

Programme note reads - Europe's Finest storyteller, Abbi Patrix, makes a dramatic return to the Barbican with his reflections on the metaphor, 'the end of the world'. Explore the known and the unknown universe with personal tales of exotic travel and myths of ancient wanderings to the borders of the world. An evening of absurdity, mystery and compassion awaits!

In 2003, Jillian Barker, Head of Education at the Barbican Centre, London, approached Ben Haggarty, Artistic Director of the Crick Crack Club, with a proposal to programme regular performance storytelling at the Barbican Centre. Since 2003 the Crick Crack Club has worked in partnership with Barbican Education to programme 9 events a year in the Barbican Pit Theatre, for adult audiences. These events are programmed during the three school half terms each year, with usually three evening events per half term. The performances of storytelling are occasionally preceded by pre-show talks. The Pit Theatre is an award winning black box theatre, which seats approximately 180 people (depending on the seating configuration).
