Pabuji is a medieval hero-god from Western Rajasthan. The principal form of worship of this god entails the nighttime singing, by bard-priests or Bhopos of an oral epic of stories of Pabuji's deeds, his life and death. This telling takes place in front of a long painted cloth, 'par' or 'pad', which illustrates the story as it is told and functions as a temple to the deity. The epic is sung, chanted and told through song, poetry and prose in the Rajasthani language. Bhopos generally accompany themselves with music on a stringed fiddle or on a pair of earthen drums. Bhopos often perform with their wives, but some perform with their aunts, their brothers or their sister in law, who will sing accompaniment and use an oil lamp to light the sections of the scroll to illustrate the story as it is told.
