Juniper Tree, The
Jimmy
a Man without a Story story

Sound recording, story; a section of Jimmy, a wonder tale and transformation tale from the Scots Traveller tradition and The Juniper Tree, an Indo-European wonder tale collected by The Brothers Grimm, told by a pupil, as part of a performance Go Down in Legend, as the finale of a school storytelling project led by Ben Haggarty, in King Alfred's School, in an unidentified location in England, 4th February, 1990.

Continuation of the frame story of Jimmy told by a pupil in role as a Master of Ceremonies, with a pupil acting as Jimmy being sent out for a forfeit for not being able to tell a story, followed by a story told by another pupil. A mother kills her step-son and arranges it so that her daughter thinks that she has killed him. The mother makes soup from the boy's body and feeds it to his father, her husband. The daughter buries the bones of her step-brother under the Juniper tree and from those bones appears a bird, who sings the song of the story to the goldsmith, the cobbler and workers at the old mill, and collects as payment, a gold necklace, a pair of red shoes and a mill-stone. The bird returns home and begins to sing. It give the father a gold necklace, the step-sister the red shoes, and the step-mother the mill-stone, which the bird drops on her and kills her. The Juniper tree then bursts into flames and splits, and out walks the boy.
