A story about a soldier who retires from the army with his wife to a house, which he finds the devil has a claim over. He bargains with the devil and agrees to give him half of his harvest each year. The first year he gives the devil the top half of his crop, the next year the bottom half, and in the third year, the middle half, and grows crops accordingly. The devil is cheated out of his half share and challenges the soldier to bring to him an animal which he cannot name, and he will do the same. The soldier's wife dresses up, and when they meet the devil, he cannot name the creature she has become, and is tricked into giving away the name of the animal he himself brings (the Rabagoodbegone). The soldier and his wife win the house from the devil. | |
