Phyllida Shaw has been an independent researcher, writer and facilitator, specialising in arts policy and management since 1988. Prior to this she was Research Officer for the National Campaign for the Arts, a researcher in the Greater London Council’s Arts Policy Studies Unit, and Coordinator of the Community Programme at Battersea Arts Centre.
She has worked extensively for the publicly funded arts funding system, for local authorities, government departments, grant-making trusts, higher education institutions and for a wide range of performing and visual arts organisations and museums. She has a particular interest and expertise in working with smaller organisations.
As a result of her work with grant-making trusts, local authorities and individual arts organisations Phyllida has a detailed knowledge and understanding of the ethos and working practices of artists and arts organisations working in and with communities of different kinds, in rural and urban areas.
Phyllida is a board member of three other organisations: Fabrica, an artist-led gallery in Brighton; Arts Research Ltd, publisher of Arts Research Digest; and of Ignite!, an organisation that works with young people to reveal and develop their capacity for creative thinking.
